Proactive Self Defense [Kyusho]

Today I saw an ad on one of my website for "Proactive Self Defense." So I followed it and discovered it was an ad on Amazon selling personal "tasers." Interesting idea really, but how proactive is this?

The problem with this kind of ad, and the companies that promote them is the lack of integrity in the ad themselves.  Now I have no issues with people arming themselves for self defense purposes. It saddens me to think this is necessary, but in many places it really is!

But there several problems.

  1. Who will train them to use one? Obviously if they are being sold on Amazon there barriers to purchase are almost non existent!
  2. Is the carrier aware use can end up being lethal? The use of lethal force has its own legal complications.  Without the proper training mentioned above the odds increase of this happening.  Not to mention the mental issues associated with taking a human life.
  3. What personal training does the "defender" or "carrier" have to avoid unnecessary use of the taser gun? Or will they simply be reactive to the situation and assume harm?

It all gets down to training!

Proactive Self Defense

There is an epidemic today of people discussing the idea of Proactive Self Defense. People are purchasing weapons like the taser or guns, but not doing the real work they need to do, to make sure it really is a step towards Proactive Self Defense.

There is nothing more dangerous or foolish than carrying a weapon that you have not been FULLY trained to use.  Women carrying "pepper spray" and end up having it taken and used against them! Or they miss, spray themselves due to wind or adrenaline rushes that cause bad judgment.

Proactive Self Defense

Proactive Self Defense

Wanna carry this? Then you need to be properly trained to use it!

The sale of these products is the result of good marketing, and BAD implementation ideas! Again I restate! I have no issue with people carrying weapons, but the need to be trained!

I have a good friend in the USA, Dr Dan Meadows who trains people in firearms. Look him up from this link if you want to learn more!

Real proactive self defense is about preparation! What is begin advertised with these taser is really reactive. Want a taser? Do the proper training first!

Proactive Self Defense

Proactive self defense is about preparing for a bad situation, learning to see the warning signs and peacefully dealing with the situation to prevent it from turning to violence.

You must develop skills to de-escalate a potentially bad situation, taking control of it. Then if this option fails having the tools to control or deal with the violence in a calm and control manner.

Proactive Self Defense - Stay Away!

Proactive Self Defense - Stay Away!

Thus making sure anyone in the vicinity, as well as yourself remain safe. This may require UP to and including lethal force. But lethal force ONLY when required and allow in by law! Anything else is foolhardy! Unless you wish to end up in a prison yourself.  I personally believe violent criminals should lose their rights! However that is only my opinion. i must by law respect there rights whether I agree or not!

Anything else can land me in jail.

Proactive Self Defense - Personal Safety

There are 2 ways to go about the idea of proactive self defense and personal safety. One is the option most people chose. Which is DO NOTHING.  It is not a "bad" option, you are simply playing the odds nothing will ever happen.

The second is to get off the couch and do the work! Become trained in all aspects of self defense. Real self defense from the ground up! Buying a weapon and then not training is a mistake! It is also a HUGE mistake to not have serious basic self defense training too!

Proactive Self Defense - Basic training.

Now I am not a weapons expert by any stretch of the imagination. I am pretty good with a knife, but I do not consider myself an expert.

However I have a solid solution for unarmed self defense! A program built from the ground up to teach deescalation, and control of bad situations. Plus dealing with the problem if violence does occur!

Verbal Self Defense Skills Are Important!

Verbal Self Defense Skills

Verbal Self Defense Skills

Verbal Self Defense Skills

Self Defense is not a black and white subject. There are many different facets to it, and one of these is the importance of Verbal Self Defense Skills. Now this seems like a pretty easy topic. But much of what is taught is plain wrong.

Verbal Self Defense Skills are consider to be a way in which to communicate with a potential attacker to hopefully defuse, de-escalate or end a confrontation. However if there are no physical skills present to go along with these verbal communications the odds are they will not work effectively if at all. Your training needs to be complete as possible and part of a normal routine of fitness.

Verbal Self Defense Skills

Quite often teachers of these types of Verbal Self Defense Skills will tell people to state "NO" very strongly. But there problem is for the most part this is not going to work! It will have little meaning and the attacker may even consider it humorous.

As I was looking today at some of what is being taught one thing really grabbed my attention. This was the idea that somehow all this Verbal Self Defense is a Zen art-form and not manipulative.

Yeah, NO you are being deliberately manipulative to buy time, delay an action from the attacker and hopefully discourage them enough to move on.  Don't worry about their "feelings" as some people will teach. I don't care at all what happens to this person once they leave my sight!

Things NOT to do
Verbal Self Defense

Verbal Self Defense

As much as I do not care if this guy steps out on the road and gets hit by a bus you do not want to insult them. Do not feed the anger. Be strong and assertive as well as vert clear with your COMMANDS, "get out of here NOW!!!"

No matter how well trained you are do NOT threaten them with anything, even the police. If someone is with you tell them in a loud voice "call 911 NOW, do you hear me!?!?" No need to address this as a threat to the assailant.  Make them believe you are in charge!  Under most circumstances the attacker wants a easy victim!

Things To Do

Be loud and assertive in your communications! Try to keep your body on a 45 degree angle from the would-be attacker so he or she will need to keep re-positioning to remain  dominant!

And LOOK THEM IN THE EYES. Not doing this makes you appear like a victim and will encourage pursuit. You can glance away when they speak like you are thinking about what they are saying, but keep them in your peripheral vision at all times.

Keep your hands up in a non confrontational position, not like picture above! Hand up, at a 45 degree angle, pinkies towards them, hands open! Not far from the body so they can be used to fend off a reach. This also prevent them [you] from being grabbed as easily.

Practice Verbal Self Defense Skills!

You need to practice to get good at this. The very best way to do this is being alone in front of a mirror and just do it! After some time your confidence will grow and you can train this will friends or colleagues depending on your personal situation.

Remember the only reason that this incident has not yet turned to violence is because the attacker has not YET decided to hurt you!

Self Defense Tips

Top 5 Self Defense Tips

Top 5 Self Defense Tips

Today I want to give you the Top 5 Self Defense Tips with a Kyusho Jitsu flare to them. Now this is not today about techniques, but most of all being safe on today very unpredictable streets.

Much of what is taught is unfortunately not very effective. It can be complicated to learn and some is just dangerous! But there are real solutions!

So keep reading to discover them!

Top 5 Self Defense Tips

Top 5 Self Defense Tips

These commonly taught techniques pictured here are not effective!

Here is the list now of the Top 5 self defense tips all based on common sense.

Self Defense Tips #1

Know you surroundings! I know this sounds like real common sense but you cannot image the number of people who have no clue! Now I live in a country with a VERY low violent crime rate. Currently, but that can change very quickly! Therefore be prepared always!

Self Defense Tips

Self Defense Tips

Here is a classic example of what NOT to do! It is only a purse, let it go and bring the police into the matter!

Always be safe!

Today you see people walking down the street, faces buried into their cell phone with no clue what is going on around them.  This gives the signal to ANY predator that says "ATTACK ME."

Put away the cell phone! Facebook, Twitter and Messenger are NOT emergencies! Don't make yourself a victim! I leave my cellphone in my pocket!

Self Defense Tips #2

Notice I did not say "leave your cellphone home?" A cellphone when used properly is the greatest self defense "tool" in the world! Why? No not so you can hit the attacker with it! But so when something is wrong you can call the POLICE!

Every cellphone has a GPS tracking device in it that can help the police local exactly where you are! These work better then you realize!

Here is a listing of common emergency phone numbers world wide. But check your area for the correct number! Have the number on speed dial is best because during an emergency you may not be able to dial very well! Even if you are experienced in self defense do this anyways!

Most of all safety first! Ego LAST!

Self Defense Tips #3

Seasoned self defense people and martial artist know this! However on the weekend I read a self defense article on WikiHow that was simply WRONG!

Knife Attacks

Knife Attacks

It was about knife defense, which is hands down the most "dangerous" situation the average person will ever face! They told the readers to yell "HELP!"

Yeah NEVER well "HELP" unless there is a Police Officer within visual range!  Why? Because NO ONE will come! People today do NOT want to be involved and yelling help is rolling the dice!

Instead yell "FIRE!!!"

And the reason? People love to watch things burn! This will catch the attention of anyone in the area and human nature says they will come and see what is going on! Understanding the psychology of how people think is a wonderful thing!

Self Defense Tips #4

Find a BUSY place to flee to! Do not go down dark alleys and deserted streets to get away. Try to find a place with lots of people! The odds are this will discourage the attacker and make him move on!

Self Defense Tips - No Alleys!

Self Defense Tips - No Alleys!

The situation does not get much worse than this! However it likely could have been prevented and there are ways out!

This will be covered in H.P.P.T Level Three

Therefore this is why awareness of your surroundings is so important! Know where you are at all times! I talk constantly with my Kyusho Jitsu Students about the value of knowing where NORTH is. Make knowing you surrounds a part of everything you do!

If you are in your car and think you may be followed do not go home! Drive once again somewhere well populated and use tip #2! Call the Police, always call the Police! It is there JOB!

Self Defense Tips #5

Get some self defense training! Now this is where I hear all the MMA guys going, "I am a trained fighter, I don't need this!" Yeah, no YES you DO!

Understanding Body Mechanics

Understanding Body Mechanics

Today most martial arts are sport oriented which is fine, but KNOW your limitations! Winning a battle in a ring, every at the high level is not the same thing! In a ring your opponent wants to WIN! On the street the attacker wants to KILL YOU!!

There is a BIG DIFFERENCE!

Now I hear many fighters talk about the guy they dropped on Friday night downtown. Yeah that is a FIGHT. When you have an argument with some guy who called your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other names and fisticuffs begin, that is a FIGHT.

This is 2 idiots who have giant egos who like to prove their worth. Have fun, that is NOT SELF DEFENSE! Enjoy the assault charges!

Now as for some serious self defense training I do have a solution for you!

Real Self Defense Solutions

No matter if you are an experienced martial artist, with or with Kyusho Jitsu training. Or perhaps just someone reading this article who is looking to learn the basics of self defense? Then I have a solution for you!
