My Kyusho Black Belt Journey

Kyusho Black Belt

My journey to getting a Kyusho Black Belt began way back in 2002 when I attended my very first George Dillman seminar. The seminar was hosted by Steve Stewart in London Ontario. I was excited and fascinated to go. I had seen a Kempo master perform a knockout once before, but I was not convinced what I was seeing was possible,

Little did I know how wrong I could be!

After that fateful Saturday afternoon I was hooked and wanted to learn more. Not because of the knockouts, but rather the increase in pain I could get in my joint locks by making small chances to include pressure point manipulation.

Why was this so important to me? After 20 years of working on an assembly line at Chrysler my hand had suffered a lot of damage. Kyusho Jitsu gave me back what I lost there.

My History in Martial Arts

Aging Martial Artists Circa 1993

Philip's School 1993 - 4th from left

Because to many martial artists, masters and grand masters history and/or linage is very important. I want to include a little about mine.  I began my martial arts career back on November 10th 1984 in the Chung Oh's systems of Hapkido / Taekwondo in Windsor Ontario Canada.  This was an old world school, with a combination focus on self defense and tournament fighting [TKD style].

However rather then spend about 5000 words in this post to talk about all this history, if you are interested you can follow this LINK. It leads to a series of posts on the History of The Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts Institute in Canada.

Getting My Kyusho Black Belt

After the seminar in London as I have said before I was hooked!  I registered for GM Steward's study group and prepared for fall when the classes would begin!

I am not going to give you all the details of driving back and forth to London each month. Nor talk about the 3 hour sessions of Kyusho Jitsu we had.  I am sure you can figure out for yourself the work involved in study.

But what I want to talk of is something that today I find humorous.  That is my first session.  GM Stewart had a rule. There were 12 sessions, you HAD to attend 11 or you would not grade.  On my very first session I broke all the rules to make sure I could attend!

Now I operated my own school, that ran 6 days per week. But that was not an issued. I could cover classes while I was gone. No, the woman I was in a relationship and I had purchased a house. And my first class was on moving day!  I got a truck, found some students and parent to help move. And I was off to London!

Apparently that is a relationship "no no." She did not say a word about it to me. But the relationship crashed and burned about 6 months later.  This is one reason I am sometimes called the "king of broken relationships."

3rd Dan Grading with GM Steve Stewart

My dedication to what I was doing had not bounds! But I got my Kyusho Black Belt.

Today is Simpler

I would not say that getting a Kyusho Black Belt is any easier, but it has become simpler.  And there is good reason for it. The advances in video streaming and access to information has truly revolutionized everything!

But you still have to do the work! If this is something that interests you I have a great way for you to achieve this!

Novice Kyusho Jitsu Home Study Course

Back in 2009 I created the Kyusho Jitsu Home Study Course. It was a tremendous hit! Since that time I have updated,  and make it an all inclusive certification course for the motivated martial artists who wished to keep learning. Most of all everything is here for you to learn and grade for a 1st Dan Kyusho Black Belt.

Right now for a limited time you can save a bundle of money too! Follow the link below and read all about the course, and how it will benefit everything you do in your martial arts study.

Fact! Pressure Point Self Defense WORKS

Pressure Point Self Defense WORKS

Pressure Point Self Defense

Pressure Point Self Defense
H.P.P.T Class in Canada

The fact is Pressure Point Self Defense WORKS! Plan and simple, however you do have to know what you are doing in order to make it work.  Today I am going to give you a true life personal example.

There was a BIG party being held at a local pub back in 2011 I believe it was. They were relocating to a new place down the road. This was closing day for the old one, and so there was a celebration. I joined my son at about 7:00pm there for dinner, and spend the evening with a few drinks and some friends. It was a great time!

A Disruptive Person

We all know that alcohol consumption tends to have 2 effects. It makes the person and happy and silly, or angry and miserable. In this case it made a man there, lets call him Tom a little on the aggressive side.

I was sitting at a big table late in the evening with Tom beside me. There were about 12 people at this particular table. As things often due the subject turned political. I hate when this happens because politics can turn a good man or woman stupid, especially when booze is in the picture.

Tom was arguing with a young woman across the table, she said something that set him off. He stood up and reached across the table for her. Yeah he is a piece of crap, but there is a story to that too!

What Happened Next

So what happened next was I stood and redirected Tom's right hand towards me, which was open and took a finger lock,  very easily with his index finger. From here my left hand went in for support, and I pressed on PC-6, while applying low pressure to the lock, enough cause pain and control him. He screamed and I told him "firmly" to sit his ass down NOW!

Finger Lock

Finger Lock

I then told him very strongly "Tom you don't want to do this, because if you do it again I am going to throw you through that F***ing window." Tom was then told by management it was time to go home. They put him a taxi and no one say him for several months.

FACT Pressure Point Self Defense WORKS!

Bad Situation Contained

Now this could have very easily become a police matter. Perhaps it should have. But I really did not want a nice evening destroyed by one drunk, especially over a stupid political discussion. What controlled the situation was Humane Pressure Point Tactics, a dedicated serious training to understand and control "bad" situations. Therefore keeping them from getting worse!

Without the training I had, this confrontation may have gone very bad, resulting is serious injury, to Tom not me, and police involvement.  The best part was about a year later Tom and I sat and had a drink together. I had a beer and he had a virgin drink. Tom stopped drinking. Nice end to things for all concerned.

Understanding Escalation

Understanding how and why situations escalate is a critical part of serious self defense training. Most of all being able to control a bad situation before they gets worse.  And then because of this understanding being able to switch gears with the appropriate force necessary to deal with any escalation.

From what I see in the wild few martial artists understand this. Even fewer can apply it!

This is where Humane Pressure Point Tactics come into play!

Getting a Proper Pressure Point Education

You can look at self defense and threat at several different levels. But lets just look at 3 for the moment.

  1. Low escalation, which is what I described above.
  2. Medium escalation, which is approaching serious and requires a FAST resolution.  The best solution being a Neurological Knockout.
  3. Serious, which is life and death and requires very specific training to handle.

In a later articles I will discuss the other 3.  However for your reading pleasure take a look at this article on the 13 Misconceptions about Knife Attacks written by a real former Detroit police officer.

However back on topic today we are talking about dealing with the low escalation and how pressure point self defense can help you to handle these kinds of situations. Beginning in June of this year we are going to be offering very specialize training course at Kyusho Jitsu University.

Humane Pressure Point Tactics

Humane Pressure Point Tactics

There will be a total of 3 Levels of what is called Humane Pressure Point Tactics. Below is a link so you can learn more about this very special training. The exact system I used in the example true story above!

Important Pressure Points

Pressure Points

Pressure Points of the Arm

Pressure Points of the Arm

Today I was thinking about the pressure points I will be adding reference too in the Encyclopedia of Kyusho Jitsu. Now I have already added Alarm Points, Associated Alarm Points as well as Special Alarm Points. However I want to add a good reference for certain "regular" pressure points that could be considered as "important" or critical to learn. Therefore I am asking for a little help.

I am getting myself in deep here! But I do want this to be the premier Kyusho Jitsu reference on the planet.

Points to add

So the following pressure points will be part of this reference.

  • St-05
  • GB-20
  • TW-17
  • BL-10
  • LI-18
  • ST-09,10
  • SI-16
  • LU-10
  • LU-5
  • PC-06
  • TW-11
  • TW-12
  • SP-21
  • SP-11
  • GB-31
  • SP-06

Now I have excluded Alarm and Associated Alarm Points from this list. Plus I did it so the layout here would work too. But aside from that what other points should I give specific references too? What ones would you like to see referenced as part of the Encyclopedia Of Kyusho Jitsu?

Please comment below and tell me what else I should add! If you are not yet familiar with the Encyclopedia of Kyusho Jitsu use the link below and read more.

The Importance of Alarm Points

Importance of Alarm Points

Importance of Alarm Points

Importance of Alarm Points

Kyusho Jitsu students often miss the importance of Alarm Points. Often they will look at these thinking they only need to memorize the points. Not seeing how deep the information goes, or how important it really is!

When you do something long enough, work hard enough at it then it becomes second nature. After sufficient time, practice and understanding this becomes a method you can "cheat" to get a result!

What is an Alarm Point?

An Alarm Point is a special pressure point on the body that has a direct relationship with the organ it represents. This is also a very important crossover principle into the study of Dim Mak. Attacking an Alarm Point will have a direct and profound effect on the organ itself, as well as the meridian, and potentially other meridians as well.

Back several years ago I did some workshops on Alarm Points and recorded the information. Now you can get a hold of this and begin to understand how these important points work, and how to apply them!
