The Fight or Flight Reflex and Self Defense

Fight or Flight Reflex

The Fight or Flight Reflex

The Fight or Flight Reflex

Understanding the Fight or Flight Reflex is a "master key" to teaching and accomplishing successful self defense. But from what I have seen in the industry only a hand full of teachers actually understand it. Below is a definition.

Fight or Flight Reflex: "The fight-or-flight response is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival."

Now pretty much everyone understands this on an intellectual level. The issue is people do NOT understand it on an application level.

Application of Fight or Flight Reflex requires some specific training. Some people have "natural" control when it comes to this, I was lucky to have been one of these people. But this is a psychological occurrence and not related to normal martial arts training like some think. I will also say this categorically, this response has nothing to do with ring fighting, or sport. You DO NOT experience the Fight or Flight Reflect in a ring.

Training it

When this reflex kicks in one of two things are going to happen. You will freeze like a deer in the headlights, or your will fight back (or run). This is a massive dump of adrenaline to the systems, chancing blood flow, heart rate, breathing rate and many other physiological occurrences. You can train this in a martial arts setting by slowing ramping up "stress training." My favorite methods were to simulate an attack in the dark. This was a student favorite, and also multiple attacks. What martial arts teacher often don't get is this is the students response is look at first. Then after they get used to these things happening you worry about the defense.

Step by step!

Next we need to look at the tools required, once the student can deal with the response of the nervous system, required to end the conflict FAST! The very best scenario is to be able to end the attack in no more than 3 strikes, preferably one! Before i go on I will point out that everything happening here is due to a neurological response. So why would you not learn to take advantage of that?

The One Hit Knockout

Recently I was at a seminar with a Hapkido presenter, a very well respected man and rightfully so. What he was teaching as street caused me concern because it seemed to be the wrong level of escalation. If you put someone in an arm bar who is trying to kill you what will you do next? What will you do if his buddy is near by and is going to cut your throat?  Self Defense is not 1 dimensional. You are also not going to press a point and finish the fight.

You need to strike the correct place, the correct way and fortunately there are MANY such places on the body. Your root art training should be able to get you there! If not you need a new system.

There are also many systems out there and teacher who want this kind of information, but do not wish to commit to a full study of the science of pressure point self defense to get it. I have a solution for this! Back in 2017 I released a book called Understanding Neurological Pressure Point Knockouts which teaches how to knockout someone out with ONE HIT pressure points.

Teaching Kyusho Jitsu is our Mandate

Teaching Kyusho Jitsu is our Mandate

Teaching Kyusho Jitsu

Teaching Kyusho Jitsu

In the KJWA teaching Kyusho Jitsu is what we are all about. This is our mandate. When I first began the journey studying the science of pressure point self defense I was very surprised at how little "good" information there was online. There were books you could order. But I found that they often lacked real information on the topic. I can recall reading about Alarm Points in one, but is did not say anything about using them.

Even seminars are often time done with the sole purpose of booking more seminars. Very little real in depth information was given out. Now obviously there are exceptions to this! But this has been my experience.

Teaching with Systems

I have spend years designing systems of teaching to get the information out to those who wished to learn. I think I have done a decent job of it! But there was still one thing left, one part missing.  Then while I was in Spain last June a man suggested to me that my most recent eBook, The 15 Principles Plus One of Kyusho Jitsu was awesome but needed a glossary of terms, I realized "encyclopedia."

Encyclopedia of Kyusho Jitsu

At this point the idea of the Encyclopedia of Kyusho Jitsu was realized. I wanted to create the ultimate reference for the student of Kyusho Jitsu. One that could be accessed from a PC or mobile device. I also wanted to create something that could be easily expanded upon, and continue to grow.

Today we are in the testing phase for the online version. Once it is ready to go the various mobile platforms will be made.  You can become part of this project and help to test the online systems. Testing is easy! Go to the website linked below, create and account and visit every few days to look at updates on the information. Mostly you will be looking for dead links, bad spelling and other errors.

Thank you for your support! The Kyusho Jitsu World Alliance is all about our students and instructors! Without you we are nothing! If you have any questions please feel free to comment below! Also share this an other posts with your friends on social media!

Attack Using Yin & Yang

Attack Using Yin & Yang

Attack Using Yin & Yang

Attack Using Yin & Yang

One of the 5 Novice Kyusho Jitsu Principles Attack Using Yin & Yang is very effective! However it does require some work to fully understand! One of the basic ideas behind this is to respond to an attack with the "opposite" of what the attacker is doing. But it is not really as simple as that!

Here is a excerpt from my book called the 15 Principles Plus One of Kyusho Jitsu.

Yin & Yang

"The Yin/Yang symbol is one of the oldest in the world, and one of the most misunderstood. People look at it, and then dissect it into opposites, which it is not, it is a “whole.” The name of the chapter is not really correct. It is not Yin and Yang, but Yin/Yang.

This principle is DEEP and one that can stand on its own. It represents completeness within incompleteness. As well as incompleteness within completeness. But it has directly relationships to every principle! So let’s begin with the principle and look at the body. You can divide the body up into various segments. The front of the body is YIN, and the back of the body is YANG. The top half is YIN, the bottom half is YANG etc. We have Yin organs and meridians, and Yang organs and meridians. But NONE are completely one or the other. Just as light leads to darkness,
darkness leads to light.

This principle also depends on correct body mechanics to be effective. As an example, in many martial art system which are consider to be “hard” styles the punch is king. However, this will not always yield the best results. A target like the head which is “hard” is best served with a soft weapon like a palm hand, while a soft target like the body, is best served with a harder weapon like the fist. Which makes conditioning of the hand totally unnecessary as you learn to use the correct tool, for the correct purpose."

So if you would like to learn more about this principle I have a something that can really help you! Right now for a limited time you can grab a copy of our Kyusho Jitsu Home Study Course for an amazing price! This is a FULL Kyusho Jitsu Certification Course, all downloadable content that sells for $797.00! But right now you can grab ir for ONLY $67!!

Yes that is right ONLY $67!

This is a $730 savings! Don't miss out! If you have any questions please feel free to comment below! Also consider sharing this and other posts on your social media account to help spread the teachings of pressure point self defense.

Kyusho and Self Defense Responsibility

Kyusho and Self Defense Responsibility

Kyusho and Self Defense Responsibility

Kyusho and Self Defense Responsibility

The truth is Kyusho and Self Defense Responsibility go hand in hand. But in some ways it has become the elephant in the room, so we need to talk about it! Today in the martial art world sensationalism has taken over.  The brutality of the MMA/UFC world is front and center. Egos fly and trash talk is encouraged to help promote the events.

But it all causes a reflection on the arts in general.

We worked a long time to promote the martial arts as something peaceful, something to aid in building character, confidence and to fight as a last resort. Today that is kind of gone. So what can be done to correct the ever tarnishing image of the martial arts? As practitioners we must understand "reasonable force."

Reasonable Force

First realize the public does not understand anything about our training or us. People will ask me immediately, "did you win a lot?" Or automatically assume I was one of these cage type fighters. So then what happens if we are attacked on the street? The public view becomes excessive force immediately! That can also lead to serious legal issues in court as we must then "PROVE" we only defended ourselves and used reasonable force. Public opinion unfortunately matters!

Plus with all the video and surveillance going on we must consider it even more!

Why Pressure Points are Important

This leads to why the science of pressure point self defense becomes to important. It will allow you to end a threat with the correct force, and quickly.  Plus much of what happens is concealed and not seen by the videos like sitting on a guy and beating him unconscious. That happens more often then you realize, and a claim of self defense goes with it! This damages the industry and brings the right to self defense in question.

Therefore learning Kyusho becomes a must! You can begin FREE with our Kyusho Jitsu Video Mini Course. This is a one month course, with a lesson every 3 days. Fill out the form below and join today!

Kyusho Jitsu Head Points

Kyusho Jitsu Head Points

Kyusho Jitsu Head Points

Lets spend a few minutes today and talk about Kyusho Jitsu Head Points. Also known as pressure points of the head. In self defense it is often the most desirable to target the head. The head will naturally give a good result since it does house the brain. I know what you are thinking! For some people that is questionable! But lets take a look at the best place to strike!

Depending on the result you are looking for some points work better then others. It also naturally depends on the situation and what is the most directly available. Here is a look at the primary ones for a knockout.

  1. ST-05
  2. GB-20
  3. TW-23

These 3 points are often the primary targets. But did you know the following points can also result in a knockout?

  1. TW-17 - However this is a dangerous point
  2. LI-20
  3. GB 13,14,15. Also known as the Gall Bladder Triangle

Now I am really only talking about a handful of points here. But this will get you started! There are also some great points on the neck and throat area. But they are not typically grouped as "head points."

Kyusho Jitsu Head Points

If you would like to discover more about pressure points of the head I have a really cool set of videos for you! They are part of an advanced principles series and are a total steal right now!
