Are there Secrets Inside Your Kata?  This is actually a controversial subject especially if you speak to a very devout traditionalist! But there are Secrets Inside Your Kata waiting to be seen and unleashed!

Traditional Kata Meaning

Kata [patterns] has very traditional meaning or interpretation within them. This includes all styles of martial art being taught.  These interpretations, which the term actually offends some traditionalist, are very important.

But there is MORE in their than people think! There is also a SOLID self defense reason to look at Kata in a different light!

There is always a danger within the ideal of tradition that is can become "dogma" very quickly. Therefore tradition should be looked at understanding all things do change, and there is no exception.

Nothing in the world stays the same. Most of all, it is best to honour tradition, with the idea that growth also needs to happen.

I very much believe in the teaching of traditional interpretations for Kata. These helps the student learn and understand the techniques and movement.  And it also links what they are learning to a high purpose, honoring those who created it. 

However for the sake of self defense, the student also needs to begin to see what else is there! Hence learning the Secrets Inside Your Kata.

When you teach someone a predetermined movement the brain is then taught, over time to develop the movement as motor skill. This is also called "muscle memory." The problem however is the student does NOT see the application as they should!

Therefore the student needs to be taught to "see" their own meaning, based on the 3 different attack methods. AND ever move in every Kata can be interpreted for the 3 attack types.

These are:

  1. Push
  2. Grab
  3. Punch

Let's look at an example.

The Down Block

The "Down Block" or Low Block as I was taught to call it is often times looked at for the blocking of a kick. Sure that can be done. But there is much more to it than just that! Below is a short video looking the Down Block applied from a GRAB.

Now teaching that is one thing! But when the student begins to study the movement and see this for themselves, the brain acts differently. This type of learning will dramatically increase the chances the student could use the technique on the street!

It is more than JUST muscle memory! It is also how the unconscious mind see the techniques. This is what the Secrets Inside Your Kata are! Then when related to pressure points in the vicinity, the movement becomes VERY effective in self defense.

And the great news? This is all part of the teaching of the science of pressure point self defense called Kyusho Jitsu.

Kyusho Jitsu Power Principles

Depending on who you study from you may or may not have heard about the Kyusho Jitsu Power Principles. These are 3 simple principles that dictate how the body creates and utilizes power. 

More importantly these are directly related to the subject of the principle of Attack Using Correct Body Mechanics.

What are the Kyusho Jitsu Power Principles?
  1. Body Mass - The amount of force that can be developed as a direct result of the mass or weight of the body of the attacker or defender.  This also ties in together with any forward motion. 
  2. Torque - The way in which the body moves from the hips. As you walk forward you do not walk in a straight line. You walk instead in a Zig Zag pattern, with each hip retracting and spine turning in an opposite direct of the hip. This torquing motion allows the upper body to increase its strength and force output. 
  3. Marriage of Gravity - This is the upward and downward motion the body creates while moving. It is pretty obvious that any downward striking action will have a great force than an upward striking action.

As I said this all ties into the idea of to attack using correct body mechanics. This would include some of the follow examples.

  1. Angles of attack and defense.  You must strike a pressure point on a 45 degree angle to activate it.
  2. 2 Way Action - Also sometimes called "complex motion." The best term I find for this is when referencing a joint lock to say fulcrum/lever activation. With a punch it relates to the torquing of the arm from the shoulder to the fist. 
  3. Centering - This refers to keeping the attack or counter attacker within your center to optimize power.  This also ties in with triangular alignment;
  4. Stances - Understanding how they work, and how to transition in and out of them to keep control of the attacker and the technique.

When you understand how body mechanics really does work you can by attacking pressure points increase the levels of pain on the attacker, plus make sure he does not have an opening to take advantage of. Thus turning the attack back into his favor.

Body Mechanics, where we find the  3 Kyusho Jitsu Power Principles hidden are the building blocks of the study of the science of pressure point self defense. Attack using proper body mechanics is the 4th of the Novice Principles.

Today I am going to talk about the Top 3 Most Painful Face Pressure Points. Pain is a great deterrent! Understanding these 3 painful face pressure points can come in very handy in a bad situation!

So let's get started!

1) Large Intestine 20

This is a wonderful pressure point. Located beside the nose in a hollow when it is pushed / rubbed can cause intense pain! One of the reasons for this is that Large Intestine is the only meridian that crosses the body. Plus we are dealing with an area of dental nerves as well as sinus cavities. If you hold the back of the head at GB-20 the effect will intensify! 

I have also successfully used this as a knockout point! See the video below.

2) Governor 26

This is another GREAT painful face pressure point! Located right under the nose at center-line this is another RUB point. You can strike it, but if you seal the head like in the previous point, and rub side to side the pain is unbearable!

This is an excellent pressure point to use if you are on your back and have been mounted. 

3) Small Intestine 18

If you saw Steven Seagal's movie Under Siege 2 - Dark Territory this is the pressure point his niece attacked on one of the mercenaries.  Another point of intense pain mostly due to the proximity of the sinus cavities. With pollution today most people have sinus issues also. 

She does a good job of the grab, however you would support and seal using the left hand at the GB-20 area.  But it does do a decent job of demonstrating the pressure point!

So what is the advantage to understanding Painful Face Pressure Points? These are control points! This allows for the application of techniques, using these kinds of points, to control a BAD situation. One that has not yet turned to out and out violence.​

    So Are Pressure Point Knockouts Real?

    Lets get down to this question now, are Pressure Point Knockouts real? If you google this question you will see a dozen videos of people preforming pressure point knockouts but NO solid information about exactly how this can happen.

    What is a Pressure Point Knockouts?

    This is a knockout based on a Neurological Event as a result of a pressure point [nerve bundle] being stimulated.  But there are things we need to understand, to really be able to answer this question conclusively.

    3 Different Types of Knockouts

    1)CONCUSSION

    Concussions are caused by blunt trauma to the head resulting in bruising or damage to one or more areas of the brain. This happens as the brain collides with the inside of the skull.  

    A concussion can be caused by heavy impact to the skull such as a martial arts strike, a fall, car accident, etc. However trauma does not always cause unconsciousness, but when it does it is a neurological event. Therefore these are very dangerous and can result in death. 

    2) NEUROLOGICAL

    A neurological knockout is caused by a short circuit, overload, or imbalance in the central nervous system. [involving both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

    Therefore this can be done using Kyusho Jitsu techniques

    And these may also be caused by extreme stress, emotions, shock, or extreme trauma to any area of the body. [A broken bone or crushed limb for example]. Neurological knockouts also occur due to excessive use of drugs or alcohol.

    3) CARDIO/RESPIRATORY

    This type of knockout is caused by limiting the oxygen supply to the brain. Therefore this can be caused by choking or strangulation involving the air supply, the flow of blood or both. These can also be caused by impact to veins or arteries. Which cause a disruption in the flow of blood,  possibly dislodging plaque from the arterial walls causing clots.  

    This is part of the Dim Mak system of training. 

    Pressure Point Knockouts

    The idea of pressure point knockouts is to attack the neurological system directly. This is done rather than just using the idea of blunt trauma. Therefore making neurological pressure point knockouts much more effective than other means.

    It is important to note that all knockouts, no matter which of the 3 listed above are brain events. Death is also a neurological event.  So, why would someone not wish to take advantage of this in self defense?

    The Problem with Most Knockout Demonstrations?

    There is a problem with many of the pressure point knockouts videos on the Internet. They simply give the watcher the wrong impression. This causes controversy and bad mouthing because of lack of understanding. People prefer gossip over learning, and so questions are not asked. 

    The argument made by many "self defense experts" and I use that term loosely is they compare an MMA knockout to a pressure point knockout. They see the "light" hit from the Kyusho student and then make the claim it won't work!

    No shit? Really? [sarcasm]

    Do you know the average lifespan of a MMA fighter is 18 months? By this time they have accumulated so many serious injuries they need to stop.  So in self defense training NO ONE with a brain is going to power strike ST-05 to demonstrate a KNOCKOUT.  Who wants a partner with a fractured, or broken jaw? 

    Therefore setup is done so that a light strike can be used to demonstrate the affect of the nerve attack.  On the street, if the opportunity to strike Stomach 5 comes up, you would hit it as hard as the situation allows! 

    A Demo with Explanation

    Below is an example of a pressure point knockout with a full explanation below.

    How was this possible?

    Very simply really. I attacked pressure point Spleen 11, which is associated with the femoral nerve, which lies on the femur bone. As mentioned in the explanation of neurological knockout above, a knockout can occur due to a broken bone.  This is common for the Femur also!

    Because of the risk of rupture of the femoral artery if this bone breaks, the kick correctly placed will cause an overload of the nervous system This causes a neurological knockout. 

    I only used about 30 percent power in the kick. How did I get a result? I took him off balance first, which occupied the brain, therefore making it easier to overload the system.

    A cornerstone, the Kyusho Jitsu Cycle of Destruction is something every student of the science of pressure point self defense is aware of. But this principle goes much deeper than many realize. Today I will address this is details for you!

    What is the Kyusho Jitsu Cycle of Destruction?

    First let's break it down into its 5 different parts.  The first thing to know is that in Kyusho Jitsu the body is broken down by the 5 element theory of Chinese Medicine. This is in of itself a complex theory.  

    Now in Kyusho Jitsu we do study the 5 Element Cycle of Creation also, but mostly focus on the Cycle of Destruction. So let's do the breakdown now.

    1. Fire melts Metal
    2. Metal chops Wood
    3. Wood penetrates Earth
    4. Earth dams Water
    5. Water quenches Fire

    From here things get a little more complicated.

    Element and Meridians

    The body is divided up into 12 different meridians, each reflected bilaterally on the body. Each meridian has a relationship to a specific element.  There are as an example 2 of each element. One is yin and the other yang.

    With the exception of fire, which has 4 meridians related to it.  Let's look at this now.

    Heart
    Pericardium
    Triple Warmer
    Small Intestine

    Metal Meridians
    Lung
    Large Intestine

    Wood Meridians
    Liver
    Gall Bladder

    Earth Meridians
    Spleen
    Stomach

    Water Meridians
    Kidney
    Bladder

    Kyusho Jitsu Cycle of Destruction

    Now you have the basic structure of how this all works.  If you study the charts you will also discover that the fire and metal meridians run into the arms, and therefore the hands. Hence the Kyusho Jitsu Cycle of Destruction begins with the implements used for striking.

    5 Ways to Master Kyusho Jitsu

    5 Ways to Master Kyusho Jitsu

    Today I want to talk about 5 ways you can Master Kyusho Jitsu. So get ready! But be warned, this means you have to do the work!

    I have been told that my knowledge of the science of pressure point self defense is "clinical." There is a reason for that. My teacher Steve Stewart has been involved in the medical profession for years, and is now a doctor of acupuncture. We tend to emulate those who teach us, so I have similar qualities.  Therefore I became clinical. 

    However Steve was more than just a teacher, he coached me all the way.

    1) Study Habits 

    The first stage to Master Kyusho Jitsu is to development great study habits. Write out notes freehand because this stimulates retention of information far more than typing on a keyboard.  You can transpose the notes to computer afterward.

    2) Time Management

    There is really no such thing as time management, but to Master Kyusho Jitsu you need to set time aside preferably daily to study. The reason "daily" is people thrive with routine. We need a combination of routine and unpredictability to be successful. It does not have to be a lot of time. 

    But without this discipline to Master Kyusho Jitsu will be almost impossible. 

    3) Systems

    You need systems of study to really be successful. I teach from a structured system to make sure the student gets the information they need, when they need it! Often times the student is distracted by the next stage of learning and moves on too quickly.  As an example in our GOLD Membership at Kyusho Jitsu University you are fed a new lesson every "X" number of days.

    This really helps keep you on track!

    4) Organize your References!

    When I first began my Kyusho Jitsu journey I had been out of school a long time. Plus I am a High School dropout! It took me time to reorganize the way I needed so I could learn.  

    Around the time I got my Master's in Kyusho Jitsu I took all my notes, my son Curt's notes and created the Novice Kyusho Jitsu Certification Workbook. After which I wrote an Advanced and Master's editions. 

    I know the eBooks are good because I now have several Kyusho Jitsu Master's in my system, and they all used the books! They are translated to Spanish also!

    5) Train the Knowledge

    You have to train the knowledge. Get on the floor with a partner and apply what you are learning.  This will give you moments of enlightenment when you will begin to see other things and other relationships to what is happening. 

    This is a "quantum leap" in your understanding!

    This brings me to "number 6" in the 5 Ways to Master Kyusho Jitsu.  The reason this is number 6 is that it is not an option for everyone. 

    You need a coach!

    I have had a total of 3 coaches in my career in the martial arts. 2 Business Coaches, Grand Master Stephen Oliver and Grand Master Keith Hafner.  Plus of course GM Steve Stewart.

    The 3 Most Dangerous Pressure Points

    What are the 3 Most Dangerous Pressure Points and why are they dangerous?

    First and foremost I will advise these pressure points should ONLY be used in life and death circumstances. They should also only be seriously studied under a QUALIFIED Kyusho Jitsu teacher.  This information is for reference ONLY.  

    No information will be given on angle and direction in this article. 

    Spleen 21

    In my personal view this is hands down the most dangerous pressure point on the human body. I always advise my students to research and understand this dangerous pressure point. But under no circumstances to use it for demonstrations. Hence self defense only! 

    Located as you can see above in the seventh intercostal space directly under the armpit area. This is the weakest point on the rib cage. Therefore a solid strike can easily break the ribs, causing a lung puncture. And possible damage to the heart. SP-21 is also a Special Alarm Point with very important ties into the Study of Dim Mak.

    The second on my list is the most dangerous pressure points is CO-17. Conception 17 lies as you can see in the image at the xiphoid process at the base of the sternum. CO-17 is also the Alarm Point for Pericardium.

    An Alarm Point is a special pressure point on the body that has a direct relationship with the ORGAN they represent. Pericardium is the "sack" that holds the heart. You can learn more about Alarm Points from here

    Fortunately proper activation of the Alarm Point does require special knowledge. You will not accidentally strike this point and cause death. There is a method of activation for use in Neurological Knockouts, however it is not the same as affecting the organ directly.  But, much damage can occur strike this point, therefore cautious is ALWAYS suggested!

    Stomach 9 & 10

    These 2 are together because it is not possible to hit one without the other.  These points are often mis-located by many practitioners which may not be a bad thing. However they are on the neck, lateral to the Adam's apple at the carotid artery. 

    Striking these very dangerous pressure points will cause a drop in blood pressure that results in unconsciousness.  It is also possible if "plaque" exist in the artery in this location for it to dislodge and end up causing a "stroke" by logging in the brain.     This set of point should be studied but only used in real life or death situations!

    Many Other Dangerous Pressure Points

    In conclusion these are what I consider to be the 3 Top Most Dangerous Pressure Points on the human body. There are however many, many others.  The study of the science of pressure point self defense is a deep one. However the benefits to the study, taking your self defense skills to a total new level is worth the effort!

    3 Effective Pressure Points of the Arms

    What are the Top 3 MOST Effective Pressure Points of the Arms? The arms are critical in self defense because this is what the attacker brings forward first! Therefore a solid understanding of the most effective Pressure Points of the arms is a must!

    When I say effective pressure points I am referring to the ones that work on the MAJORITY of people tested. Nothing in self defense can be guaranteed. Even if you have a gun there is no guarantee, ever!!

    This is an outstanding pressure point, located on the upper part of the forearm near the elbow. This is a STRIKE point, however you can also "press" on it, but I personally do not recommend that in a self defense situation. 

    This Pressure Point is struck straight through like an arrow.  Note the "through!" You hit this point HARD, striking through  towards the ground.  There is no "light touch" for pressure points. Always remember light is for training and therefore not hurting your partner. The streets are DIFFERENT!

    When this point is hit hard there is intense pain, and the hand will open slowly as the pain shoots towards it. The entire arm will go numb from the elbow to the hand. Any weapon will be DROPPED. The effect can last 10 to 20 minutes depending on how hard and clean the hit is. But always assume a short recovery time!

    This is another very effective pressure point located on the inside of the arm halfway between the elbow and hand on the thumb side.  This point, located mid radial bone works on everyone I have ever tried it one. This is why it is such an effective pressure point.

    Striking all pressure points and getting a good results means you need to be using 2 Way Action. Below is a short video demonstrating both Lung 6 and 2 Way action. 

    Also note, the tighter the grip, the more painful the result! There is also something else very interesting about this pressure point. If the attacker has any chronic lung issues, striking this point will cause them to cough. Therefore telling you more about them and potential attack points.

    This is the last of the 3 most effective pressure points of the arms and it is one of my favorites. This point also works on everyone I have ever tried it on! I also had the occasion many, many years ago to use it in self defense. This was an incident in 2007 in Caracas Venezuela at the airport. The result was a fleeing attacker with a dislocation of the elbow.

    Now this pressure point is located just above the elbow joint at the tendon.  The best result will come when the hand is twist so the palm is in the same direction as the elbow, exposing the point more clearly. However a hard strike will compensate for the hand position. Striking or rubbing this point will cause the elbow to release making dislocation easy.

    This is a VERY effect pressure point therefore caution is needed during training as to not dislocate your training partners elbow. Always train safely!

    Effective Pressure Points

    The arms have several other very effective pressure points you can use, but this is a great start! Some of the others are TW-12 and PC-02.  There are also some great setup pressure points like PC-6. But I will leave those for another day!     What is Kyusho

    Today I am going to answer in detail exactly what is Kyusho Jitsu? This is going to be a detailed NO BS answer to this question. It is time to really clear the air and let the world know the truth, without any HYPE!

    What is Kyusho?

    Let's break this down into section so you can see exactly what we are teaching. Kyusho Jitsu is really just a name. It has been translated into English a few time over the years. But the translations are really not that accurate.  But we need to call it something right?

    The first I will address is Grand Master George Dillman's translation. He refers to it as 2 Second Fighting. Literally we could break it down as "Kyu" for under, as in Kyu Belt. And "sho" as in high.  Interesting and I have heard this one many times before too.

    My explanation? I don't have one! I just use the name. It's just a name.

    So I just refer to it as the "science of pressure point self defense." Why do I call it science? Because it fits the Websters definition of science. We research what works, and what does not work, the probability of success and the percent of success.  Science is about research. It is NOT a religion like it is becoming today.

    What is Kyusho? Kyusho is a way to look at the neurological components of the human body and exploit weakness.  As an example I know there is a very sensitive nerve just above the elbow joint. 

    We have all hit our "funny bone" and it ain't funny! When stimulated properly it causes great pain, and more importantly causes the muscles in the area to "relax" releasing the elbow for easy dislocation. 

    I have never seen a case this did not work either!

    This is an involved answer, but here we go! A pressure point is a place on the body where a nerve ends, branches off into a "Y" or crosses over another nerve. Here is a FULL article and explanation of exactly "what a pressure point is and how to activate one."

    Kyusho Jitsu is Nerve Strikes

    The basic, down to the root level is that Kyusho Jitsu is nerve strikes. Nerves have many different functions on the human body and Kyusho is exploiting these.  When I teach I do a combination of eastern and western medical approaches.

    I find this gives a much better understanding for people! So we have talked about "what is kyusho," now lets talk about WHY we need Kyusho!

    Why do we need Kyusho?

    I was asked this question on a forum back a while ago. I had made a post on pressure points that give a response with a single strike. Like GB-20 being a knockout point with no other setup needed as long as it was hit correct and with enough force.

    So why is the study needed? The answer is simple really. In an attack, or a fight if you prefer that term,  opportunity for an accurate "powerful" strikes are not always there! The fact is the target is moving therefore accurate power strikes are difficult! 

    When pressure points are activated the "effect" on the nerve can last up to 20 minutes. This causes a weakness in the body.  If you accumulate these effect with other pressure points strikes you create opportunities that do not exist otherwise. 

    This takes "luck" out of the self defense equation!

    What does this require for success?

    You need ONLY 2 things for success with Kyusho Jitsu!

    1. Training in a SOLID root art!
    2. Study in the science of pressure point self defense

    This will lay the foundation for your success in a bad situation on the street! There is no "quick fix" as you often see online with "self defense gurus."  You just gotta do the work! But I am here to help you!

    3 Crippling Leg Pressure Points [Self Defense]

    Today we will talk about 3 crippling Leg Pressure Points for self defense you need to know! There is an old saying, that when in doubt attack the legs! 

    But what is the most effective way?

    3 Crippling Leg Pressure Points

    The bigger the attacker the most fragile the legs. Legs do a lot of work as I am sure you realize. But when someone is BIG they work beyond what they should. Today there is an epidemic of obesity in the world. Especially in men. 

    But that does not stop them from wanting to fight, or be a criminal! And you must understand your attacker, and what his weaknesses are! That is part of the study of the science of pressure point self defense.

    Let's Attack the Knees!

    This is the usual train of thought in the martial arts. And yes the knees are a weak area, especially on heavy people. There is a cluster of 4 pressure points around the knees that make great targets! I discuss these in DEPTH in the Novice Kyusho Jitsu Home Study Course!

    But today we will bypass the knees and go for PAIN! 

    Leg Pressure Points

    Let begin with the first of 3 leg pressure points with GB-31!

    1) Gall Bladder 31- This point is located as you can see on thigh, midway down on the Yang side. It is hit straight in like an arrow! The knee makes a GREAT weapon against it too! What happens? The leg will CRAMP. If you strike it hard enough when the leg cramps the quadriceps will cramp so badly they will TEAR.

    You cannot walk let alone continue to fight under these circumstances!  

    2) Bladder 56 - As you can see from the diagram this on of the leg pressure points that lies mid calf.

    Striking this point, like GB-31 will cause an INTENSE calf cramp. I accidentally hit this point once too hard on my Uki and he ended up with a muscle tear. I know you are getting the idea! The best weapon for this is the heal of your foot! If you have heave boots on you will get an even better result! You can also use BL-57 or BL-58. But I have found BL-56 the most effective. 

    If you can't walk....can't fight!

    3) Spleen 11 - I have talked about SP-11 many times! Located mid upper thigh on the inside this is perhaps the BEST of all leg points. I know people expect me to go with SP-6, which is a great point! Most of all it is a setup point.

    But today I want PAIN!

    Because of where the point is located it can cause a neurological knockout if you hit is hard enough. The attack is straight in like an arrow. The knee is a great weapon and so is a front kick! If you want to know HOW it can cause an knockout read 5 Best Knockout Pressure Points Here. 

    There is also a very good possibly with a hard strike of cracking or breaking the femur bone in the upper leg. As I said before, this ends the altercation.

    These are only 3 of several more very useful leg pressure points. I don't know of ANYONE who can take a strike to these points and still walk normally afterward.

    I want to once again emphasize that you hit pressure points HARD. In training you need to pull back and use a light touch to avoid injury. 

    This has unfortunately become a misconception many martial artist have about Kyusho Jitsu. It is NOT about light hits!  You must however use the correct angle and direction, and add 2 way action in order to get the best penetration and therefore results.
